The publication “Value Creation through Bioeconomy” by the German Association for Landscape Management (DVL) highlights how agricultural and forestry enterprises in upland regions can unlock new economic opportunities through bioeconomy approaches. Focusing on renewable resources, regional value chains and innovative utilisation concepts, the publication demonstrates how ecological sustainability, economic viability and social value can be combined.

Using practical examples from model farms across Germany, the report illustrates how bioeconomy works on the ground – from sheep wool used as a long-term fertiliser and biochar produced from damaged wood to agroforestry systems and community-based biogas solutions. These case studies show that circular economy principles, climate protection and biodiversity conservation can go hand in hand, even under the challenging conditions of upland landscapes.

The publication addresses farmers, foresters, municipalities and rural development actors alike. It emphasises the role of the bioeconomy as a key lever for strengthening regional value creation, securing livelihoods and preserving the cultural landscapes of upland regions in the long term.
